Having a business can be overwhelming in many ways`- from the start-up to the daily operations. Business owners know there’s really no time off; the to-do list is always growing. The issue of safety is something that always needs to be revisited, especially fire protection. Under that umbrella of fire protection is flameproofing. There are certain requirements that need to be adhered to in order for the business permits to be issued. In terms of flameproofing, decorative objects and materials must either be treated with flame repellents or they must be inherently fire resistant. Business owners need affidavits to demonstrate that they are in compliance with these requirements, and the affidavit we’ll be discussing today is the Affidavit for Inherently Flame Resistant Materials.
Different from items that need to be treated with fire retardants, items that are included in this affidavit already have met the 701 standards issued by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The Bureau of Fire Prevention needs a copy of this affidavit, which must be signed by a C-15 Certificate of Fitness holder (typically, your flameproofing company). As a business owner, you have 10 days from the time the objects are displayed or installed to file this. You must also retain a copy at your location as well.
For the Affidavit for Inherently Flame Resistant Materials to be valid, this is what needs to be on it:
- The person's name who is issuing the document, along with his C-15 Certificate of Fitness number and its expiration date.
- The name of the manufacturer of the inherently flame-resistant materials
- A comprehensive description of the materials along with an explanation of their non-combustible traits
If the affidavit happens to be inadequate, the FDNY will provide a written explanation of the shortcomings. While this is being all sorted out, the questionable items need to removed from the location until they are compliant with FDNY standards. Typically, they will need to be treated with fire retardants, and then a different affidavit - the Affidavit of Flame Resistant Treatment - will be issued instead.
There are so many things a business owner needs to be aware of. Making sure you’re in compliance with legal requirements and providing safety for your customers and employees are high priorities. However, you can rest assured that the energy you spend in meeting FDNY regulations and keeping individuals on your premises safe is energy well spent.
